The Grotta di Monte Capriolo, also known as 'Grotta di Roverè 1000' or 'Grotta del Sogno', is located in the central Lessinia region, and more specifically in the Municipality of Roverè Veronese, near Contrada Capraia. It was first explored back in 1957 by the Falchi di Verona Cave Exploration Group, and the discoveries have not stopped ever since. In fact, a new branch was discovered by speleologists from GSCAI Verona in 1985, and successful new explorations have been carried out recently by the Verona Union of Speleologists. Thanks to how easy it is to access the interior and to its array of amazing concretions, the cave was opened to the public in 1972 following maintenance work.
Visitors can access the cave thanks to a long trail of walkways (around 110 metres) which is easily accessible and well lit. A small entrance carved into the rock and a few vertical steps provide access to the first of the two caves (a collapse crater); the caverns are connected by a man-made passage. Continuing along the designated path, you reach a space over 30 metres long and half as wide. This is the main room of the cave. It is covered with a wide and abundant variety of stalactites, stalagmites, draperies and flows of different shapes, sizes and colours, creating a truly spectacular scene.
The Grotta di Monte Capriolo is the only tourist cave open to visitors in the Verona area. It is managed, in collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Roverè, by the Veronese Speleological Commission, a body which coordinates all the city's cave exploration associations and which ensures that the cave is open to the public every weekend during summer and by reservation during the rest of the year (for organised groups and school groups).
From Saturday 15th June 2024 to Sunday 8th September 2024 the Grotta is open Saturdays from 15.00 to 19.00 and Sundays from 14.00 to 19.00.
In order to visit the Grotta during ordinary opening days it is not necessary to book and groups of maximum 15 people can access every 30 minutes with a tourguide.
