Folénda - Ecomuseo delle Pietre Focaie della Lessinia

Cerro Veronese
Via Lessini, Cerro Veronese
Discover the history of flints, known as folénde, which enabled human beings to evolve thanks to their extraordinary ability to create fire by producing sparks.

The Ecomuseum of Folénda was created to preserve and tell the now-forgotten identity of the folénde. The structure is called bàito, which is an ancient rural building used for cheese production, where inside there are stones, tools, and traces of the last artisan folendàri.

The flints, called folénde in Lessinia, originated millions of years ago on the ocean floor. These stones allowed humans to develop thanks to their extraordinary ability to create fire by producing sparks.

Until the Nineteenth century, the inhabitants of these mountains collected, worked, and used this material, thus shaping the landscape. In the last century, its use has faded, and flint has increasingly been seen merely as a "stone" to be discarded, because in the fields it damaged agricultural tools or wounded the hooves of the oxen pulling the plows.
